CHARACTERS

In addition to the characters outlined below, there is an ensemble who play characters such as station porters, members of the undead and household servants.

Jonathan Harker

Harker is a newly qualified solicitor from London. Harker has a love of books and loves to search for knowledge. He is well educated, ambitious, hardworking and full of energy. The novel describes him of a faithful disposition and very emotive. He is introspective and shows great attention to detail. Harker is gentle, sweet and trusting.

Dracula

The count is a feared and respected local dignitary. His is authorative and commanding as well as being very proud and defensive. His years make him an excellent reader of people's thoughts and feelings. He is devious and calculating. Physically he has sharp white teeth, pale skin and red eyes. He is tall and inhumanly strong. The count is clothed all in black. He disposition is cold, stony and unemotive but never-the-less there is a certain power and latent majestic quality to his behaviour. As the count he has a wolf-like appearance. He is strong, has excellent physical control and suppleness. The count shows exceptional fakeness with very affected and self-conscious behaviour when at the castle. His voice has a harsh metallic whisper and his tone often mocking, superior.

The undead sisters who inhabit Castle Dracula are described as aquiline, coquettish and gloating. They have lots of long flowing hair and are voluptuous and sexy with red lips. They laugh and speak in a musical way.

Mina Murray-Harker

A 3 below mid C to D 2 above mid C

The fiancée and later, the wife of Harker. Mina is hardworking and diligent. She works as a school teacher, but has a penchant for amateur journalism and detective work. Mina, although a sister figure to Lucy Westenra, despises vanity. She is exceptionally amiable and able to connect with people. Mina is critical and questioning, but also inherently empathic and sympathetic. Her intuition, undying love, strength of character and inner strength make her the heroine of the show.

Lucy Westenra

The childhood friend of Mina Murray-Harker, Lucy is very different in character. Described as being 19 in the novel, she is very girly. Fond of secrets and gossiping, Lucy is excitable, vivacious and healthy. She is very sensitive and feels influences more acutely than other people do. To this end she eager to please, especially in playing the role of a wife or woman in the society, but is also very self aware and self conscious. She is charming, honest hearted and loved by those around her.

John Seward

A doctor who owns a lunatic asylum in London and a dear friend of Lucy. John is very clever and has advanced greatly in his life, ahead of his peers. He is 29 in the novel. He is resolute and absolutely imperturbable. He tries to read other people's thoughts although he appears very cool outwardly. He has a certain nervousness about him although is very self assured about his work. Seward speaks in a very straightforward manner. John Seward is a scientific visionary.

Quincy Morris

F below mid C to B above mid C

Young and fresh, Quincy is an experience traveller and friend of Arthur and John Seward. They have shared many of their travels together. Quincy is an avid story-teller and enjoys being the centre of attention. He is well educated and has good manners, although he is much more relaxed among friends. Quincy is witty and funny, good-humoured and playful. He remains a very faithful and brave friend, with a great heart.

Arthur Holmwood - Lord Goldalming

Arthur is the son of a very wealthy English lord. Therefore, he is prim and proper, never using slang. He is caring and very sensitive. Arthur is not particular forthcoming in social situations but very open and emotive in private company. Renfield The book ages him at 59but for the purposes of the musical, he could be any age. He is described as not like any normal lunatic who resides in John Seward's care. He is also a servant of Dracula's. When calm he has a sanguine temperament. Renfield has great strength and often exhibits animal like behaviours such as sniffing at things. He can be morbidly excitable, but is also subject to periods of gloom. He is possibly dangerous. He is meticulous there is much method in his madness ad can be devious. When angry he is sadistic and like a wild beast.

Abraham Van Helsing

AbrahamVan Helsing (possibly modelled on the author Abraham Stoker) is a professor and was a former teacher to Seward. He comes from Amsterdam where he lectures. Van Helsing is an expert obscure medicine as well as being a philosopher and metaphysician. Seward looks up to him as one of the greatest scientists of his day and is therefore very much admired. Van Helsing, through his years of experienced has developed an iron nerve despite an endearing academia about him. He has indomitable resolution, self-control and all-embracing sympathy and a love of humanity. He is also meticulous and careful in his practise of both life and medicine.
